First of all you are awesome. Very helpful and kind.

Unfortunately I've tried playing with both your solutions but problem is still there. Really really strange.
I'm gonna try and investigate further on this issue 'cause having to proof-render every single map everytime is just crazy :\

Thank you jenni

No bother, my pleasure.

All of the Autodesk Material Library materials use "Real World Map Scale" and, depending on you scene scale, may appear 12 times too big or 12 times too small (10 times for metric). Add a UVW Map modifier to your objects with the Real-World Map Size enabled, and adjust the material in the Material editor. You can also (perhaps instead) add a Map Scalar modifier and adjust the Scale value to change the size of the map.

Thanks again. Actually Quicksilver is behaving pretty well so far, i like it.

It's mental ray that is totally messing with the mapping coordinates when I try using any material from autodesk material library. Mental ray seems to render maps with wrong tiling parameters. To better explain the issue: in the viewport preview I can see a map's tiles are of a certain size; when I do a render those tiles turn out WAY smaller (I'd say 10 times smaller...).
Note that Quicksilver renders all the maps with correct parameters...
I guess those last paragraphs won't make much sense to an english speaker lol, sorry for that.

Anyway, I don't wanna bother you. :)

Thank you Jenni :)

I have not played with Quicksilver much to have seen the difference. Quicksilver is version 1.0 and not going to be the best that it can be, so expect improvements there.

Thank you so much! Before you gave me this tip I actually tried and right-clicked almost everywhere in that panel... everywhere except that very place... Needless to say I was not getting any results :D
So you pretty much just saved my life!

A little thing I've noticed: it seems there's some issues with objects' uvw coordinates when switching from Quicksilver renderer to Mental ray and vice-versa. Have this occurred to you?

Again, thank you very much for the help.

Hi Dudi,

If you right-click on the header of a Group or Library (for instance the "Materials" group or the "mental ray" materials) choose the "Display Group (and Subgroups) As" option and then the "Small Icons", "Medium Icons", or "Large Icons". When you do this with the built-in materials you get some interesting previews! :)

Hello, very nice article. I'd like to ask you one question, and please excuse my not-so-good english. As I can see, in your screenshot of the material map browser, you too (just like me) have those VERY TINY preview thumbnails on the left of the materials. Watching Autodesk's youtube movies I couldn't help but notice that every time they open their material map browser the preview thumbnails displayed are WAY BIGGER. Bigger size would actually be pretty useful in my workflow and I have no idea whatsoever on how to achieve it. Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot for your patience,
regards.

The step-by-step instructions are only useful to a certain extent, certainly. It is important to have those steps so people can duplicate the results, but you do need to have the theory behind the settings and show how a range of settings affect the renderings. I hope I have that covered in the book. :)

I appreciate your comments; I like to hear what people expect from a book.

I certainly would be interested in photografic animation rendering tricks, as i usually do design previsualization(camera and object animation).

So i'd like tricks for best photographics result, but also for faster fake rendering.

But I would like the same book located on Maya, whith an advanced section on animation.

Then Architecture and Design are essential topics. Ie how work at your best with Maya, when your customers use Inventor or other cad program?

I tried to learn Maya using books written by Max, but I get often confused.
So I had to resist the first impulse to buy your book, which I found very interesting when i watch the TOC... but unfortunatly for MAX.

In any case I do not like tutorials that give you values you have to enter in settings windows.
I prefer to learn a theoretical method teaching me to think and understand how it works under the hook,
then to be able to find the most appropriate setting by myself.

I.e., after a deep explanation of how GI works, I think a good way to teach how setting to use, is a flowchart representing the pipeline to be followed to optimize the scene.
I hope my english isn't so bad...

That is certainly a possibility! :) It isn't something I've pushed to the publisher yet. Now that we have the benefit of some time since the book finished we can look at other options for another edition and cover some different topics.

What would you most like to see in a Maya book?
